The Professional Bull Riders and Daktronics announced that they have installed more than $20 million worth of high-definition videoboards into the Thomas & Mack Center for the 2011 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals.

“When we first went to Cowboys Stadium in 2010, and saw how much the in-arena video could enhance the fan experience, we knew that it was a necessity,” said PBR President/COO Sean Gleason. “The large video not only provides a new perspective, but it also helps bring the difficulty and danger to life.”

The screens on the sides are 51 feet by 30 feet, while the screens on the ends are 30 feet by 18 feet, creating 4,230 square feet of high-resolution video. The screens contain 480 video panels – every 9mm video panel that Daktronics has available in the United States.

There are more than 10.5 million LEDs, meaning that each seat in the arena has 702 LEDs. The brightness of the boards has to be set at 50 percent or lower; otherwise it would be too bright for the audience.

“The size of the screens combined with the detail of the video make every ticket a premium ticket,” said Gleason. “There isn’t a seat in the house that doesn’t have an excellent view of the action on the dirt, and the HD coverage on the big screens will show the smallest details of the Toughest Sport on Earth.”

Bull riding resumes at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available at the Thomas & Mack Center box office, www.UNLVTickets.com, and by telephone at (866) PBR-SHOW.

The video will be provided from 14 HD cameras, and the super-slow-motion “X-MO” replay system used in the PBR television broadcasts. The PBR also had a videoboard in Tulsa, Okla., that was 27 feet by 48 feet, which is the equivalent of a 55-foot HD television.

For the 18th year in a row, the world’s top bull riders and fiercest bucking bulls are back in Las Vegas for the richest bull riding event on the planet, with a total purse of $2.2 million, including a $1 million bonus to the 2011 PBR World Champion, who also receives the coveted World Champion buckle.

PBR World Finals

The World Finals consist of six rounds of competition featuring the Top 40 bull riders in the world and the best bulls. The first five rounds feature all of the riders. The scores from the five rides will be combined, and the Top 15 riders will advance for an additional round of competition following the completion of Round 5 on Sunday, Oct. 30. The rider with the highest total score for the six rounds will earn the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals event title and $250,000.

The World Champion will be the rider with the most Built Ford Tough Series points accumulated during the regular season and the World Finals. There are a potential 5,500 points available at the World Finals, so any of the Top 6 riders heading into Las Vegas has the opportunity to win the title.

Renato Nunes entered the 2010 World Finals in third place, 1,300.75 points behind leader Austin Meier. Nunes rode his first five bulls at World Finals, ending the competition 5-for-6, and earned 4,369 points, including 2,500 as the event winner, to win the World Championship. He finished in the Top 5 in the first five rounds, including first place in Round 3.

The BFTS points and money leader this year is Silvano Alves of Pilar do Sul, Brazil, with 12,782.5 points and $363,089. The 2010 PBR Rookie of the Year has been ranked No. 1 for the past 10 weeks, and he picked up his third regular-season win in the final event at Columbus, Ohio.

Valdiron de Oliveira of Aparecida de Goiania, Brazil, is second with 10,521.5 points, and fourth in money with $307,796. Oliveira was ranked first for 17 of the first 19 weeks of season, including 16 weeks in a row.

Robson Palermo ranks second in money with $317,500 and third in the standings with 8949.5 points, while Meier is fourth with 7,995.25. 2008 PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi is in fifth place, 5,113.5 points back, and Fabiano Vieira is in sixth place, 5,126.5 points behind.

There are five PBR World Champions in the field, led by Nunes, who is from Buritama, Brazil. The others are Chris Shivers of Jonesville, La., who won in 2000 and 2003; Mike Lee of Decatur, Texas (2004); Marchi; and Kody Lostroh of Longmont, Colo. (2009).

The 2011 PBR World Finals will be televised live in HD on VERSUS at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and on NBC at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday. DIRECTV will have the first-ever 3D broadcast of bull riding at 4 p.m. ET on DIRECTV’s 3D channel, n3D™ (channel 103).

Gaughan owned or operated several hotels and casinos during his career including the Flamingo, Showboat Casino, Union Plaza Hotel & Casino, Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas Club Hotel & Casino, Gold Spike Hotel & Casino, Western Casino and the El Cortez.

Although he is now retired, the El Cortez penthouse remains Gaughan’s home. On most days, Gaughan can still be spotted playing poker on the El Cortez casino floor.

Gaughan’s influence over Las Vegas is seen to this day. He was one of the pioneers to bring boxing to Las Vegas, and his knowledge of slots made him one of the city’s top experts, with other casino owners coming to him for advice. He was also the first casino owner to institute “funbooks” for playing customers. Current Las Vegas visionary Steve Wynn credits Gaughan for helping him get his start at the Golden Nugget.
